Beijing Park Renovations Reshape How Residents Shop, Exercise, Spend Time Outdoors

Beijing opened the first phase of renovated green areas in three districts on July 8, with new paths, seating and lighting installed at Chaoyang Park and the grounds around the Olympic Forest Park.

The timing aligns with summer heat and increased demand for shaded spots, as families adjust schedules around school breaks that run through mid-August.

Changes in Specific Neighborhoods

Work crews finished upgrades along the east side of Chaoyang Park near the workers' stadium entrance and added new bike racks at the north gate of the Olympic Forest Park in Haidian District. The Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning coordinated the projects with local street offices that handle community maintenance in those zones.

Shop owners along the adjacent Gongti North Road reported higher foot traffic from residents who now linger longer in the evenings instead of heading straight home after work.

Similar work began last month near the 798 Art District in Chaoyang, where organizers added shaded seating that connects directly to nearby cafes and small galleries.

Numbers Behind the Rollout

City records show 1.8 million yuan spent on lighting and path repairs at the two main sites, with completion dates set for the end of July. Daily visitor counts at Chaoyang Park rose from 45,000 in June to 62,000 by July 7, according to park management data released this week.

These figures track with a broader pattern where improved public areas pull more people away from indoor malls during peak heat hours between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Residents can check the Beijing Parks and Forestry Bureau website for updated opening hours and any temporary closures at the affected gates. Those who live within walking distance of the sites can join free community walks scheduled for Saturday mornings starting July 12 at the Olympic Forest Park north entrance.
